Different Types Of Chimneys We Install & Repair

Masonry Chimneys

Masonry chimneys are the most popular in Bergen County, New Jersey. They are made from bricks, stones, or concrete blocks and are highly durable. Masonry chimneys can withstand high temperatures and are commonly used for fireplaces and wood stoves.

Prefabricated Chimneys

Prefabricated chimneys are factory-made for easy installation. They are typically made from metal and are lightweight and easy to assemble. Prefabricated chimneys are commonly used for gas or electric fireplaces and are often less expensive than masonry chimneys.

Rumford Chimneys

Rumford chimneys are a type of masonry chimney designed to be more efficient than traditional ones. They have a streamlined shape that helps to increase airflow, improving the performance of a fireplace or wood stove. Rumford chimneys are commonly used in historic homes and can also be used in modern homes for a more efficient heating system.

Common Problems Found from Our Chimney Inspections

Creosote Buildup

During our chimney inspections, we found several common problems homeowners face. One of the most common issues is creosote buildup. Creosote is a flammable substance that accumulates on the walls of your chimney and can cause a dangerous fire hazard if not removed. This buildup typically occurs when wood burns incompletely, leaving the tar and other residues behind.

Animal Intrusion

Another problem we often encounter is animal intrusion. Birds, squirrels, raccoons, and other critters can enter your chimney, creating blockages or nests that prevent proper ventilation. These blockages can also lead to carbon monoxide poisoning in your home.

Damaged chimney

Finally, we frequently find damage to the chimney’s structure. Cracks in the mortar or brickwork can allow water to seep in, causing further deterioration, especially during freeze-thaw cycles where water expands as it freezes.

Regular maintenance and inspection of your chimney are crucial for identifying these common problems before they become serious safety hazards for you and your family. Contact us today for a thorough inspection and cleaning of your chimney.

How Do We Install or Repair Chimneys?

A chimney installation or repair can be complicated but can be completed without incident with the appropriate procedures.  The first step in installing a chimney is determining its best location, including analyzing the roof pitch and height. Once this is determined, you will need to install flashing around the base of the chimney to prevent leaks.

Next, you must install a flue liner inside the chimney, ensuring smoke and gas are properly vented out of your home. Once this is done, you can build brick or stone around the flue liner until you reach your desired height.

One common issue in repairing a chimney is cracks or missing mortar joints. To fix this, first, remove any loose debris from inside the chimney using a wire brush or vacuum cleaner. Next, fill any cracks with mortar and use a trowel to smooth them out evenly. Finally, replace any missing bricks or stones as needed and seal off any gaps with flashing.
